Dialogue and Grammar
Study of basic grammar and vocabulary and exercises for improving speaking and listening abilities.
The dialogues revolve around the lives of Mary, a foreign student studying in Japan, and her friends and host family, presenting various situations that students are likely to encounter in their daily lives. The dialogue in each lesson contains two or three conversations, and includes all grammar points introduced in the lesson. The dialogues are recorded on the CDs in both the 6-disc sets and the 2-disc student sets.
The Vocabulary section is a list of all the new words which appear in the Dialogue and Practice sections of each lesson. The Japanese words and their English equivalents are recorded on the CDs, so that students can learn the vocabulary by listening to them. Japanese-English and English-Japanese indexes listing all the vocabulary entries are available at the end of Textbooks 1 & 2.
The Grammar section provides explanations of the grammatical items targeted in each lesson. The explanations are plainly written with minimal grammatical jargon, so that students can easily study them on their own. More lesson time can be devoted to exercises, rather than grammar explanations, if students read the Grammar section before class.
The Practice section includes exercises and activities related to the grammar items introduced in the lesson. It provides students with both basic practice and communicative activities, such as pair work and role play. The basic exercises that have only one answer are recorded on the CD, allowing students to practice on their own and check their answers with the CD.
Some lessons include additional information and notes on expressions.
Supplementary sections at the end of the lessons include expressions related to the topic of the lesson, as in "Time and Age" in Lesson 1, or situational expressions as in "At the Station" in Lesson 10.
The Expression Notes present further explanations of the vocabulary and expressions found in the Dialogue or Practice sections.

Reading and Writing
Study of Japanese characters and practice in both reading and writing
Hiragana are introduced in Lesson 1, followed by katakana in Lesson 2. Kanji are presented in Lesson 3 and the subsequent lessons.
The kanji list at the top of each lesson contains every new kanji introduced in a lesson with its reading, meaning, total number of strokes and stroke order, as well as compounds that include the kanji, and their English meaning. Approximately 15 kanji are introduced in each lesson.
Genki 1 includes practice exercises for newly-learned kanji, while Genki 2 provides review of the kanji already learned and practices for the new readings introduced in each lesson.
Readings for comprehension |
Each lesson contains one or two reading comprehension passages, followed by questions about the content. The readings in Genki 1 are basically short and deal with subjects familiar to the students. The readings in Genki 2 employ various formats and genres, ranging from letters and fables to essays and advertisements.
At the end of each lesson, there is a writing exercise relevant to the content of the lesson. If time allows, the writing practice can be done during class; if not, it can be assigned as homework.
